Teacher Projects:
William Crankshaw & Sofia Hambaryan
U.S. School: Canajoharie Central School
Location: Canajoharie, New York
Armenian School: Gyumri, Lord Byron School #20
Location: Shirak region, Gyumri
Our partnership project is set between the Gyumri School #20 (Lord Byron School) and the Canajoharie Central School.
Sofia and I will focus on the uses of music in times of celebration, ritual, and music that helps our nations to deal with profound tragedy.
The project is in three parts:
The Canajoharie High School Chamber Choir is preparing Armenian Folk Songs for performance on a CD that will be shared both on-line, and real hard copy together with the Lord Byron School Choir (American songs). The end-result will feature both Armenian and American music performed by both schools on one CD.
The Canajoharie Middle School eighth grade music classes will be discussing celebrations, rituals, and also nationalistic music that helps America deal with distress and tragedy. The Lord Byron School will do the same, and our discussions in the web form have been set up to facilitate such discussion and research and sharing.
A powerpoint presentation will be developed by both the Lord Byron School and the Canajoharie Middle School music classes that will illustrate the images of national tragedy (United States: 9/11 event; Armenia: Earthquake of 1988) through appropriate nationalistic orchestral music.
