Location: Chesapeake, Virginia

Armenian School: Vanadzor Secondary School #8
Location: Lori region, Vanadzor

Students of Ms. Siranush Safaryan at Vandzor School Number 8 and Mrs. Laura Pritchard Dobrin at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy have three projects planned.

The first project is on the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, and Human Rights. The Armenian students recorded oral histories of family and communtiy members about the Armenian Genocide, and posted them on our web space. The US students have posted information about the Holocaust, which is not studied in depth in Armenia, and they have also researched different topics on the Armenian Genocide. The students will combine their information into a PowerPoint that both sets of students can use to give presentations on the Armenian Genocide. Additionally, students will also discuss topics such as the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide and the current genocide in Darfur.

For the second project, the US and Armenian students will study 20th Century US and Armenian composers. They will study three US and three Armenian composers and listen to selected compositions. The students will also research about the composers and write responses to the music. They will incorporate these into PowerPoint presentations that again can be used by both students to share.

For the third project, the US and Armenian Students will study 20th Century US and Armenian Artists. The teachers will select the artists and certain artworks, and the students will vote on which pieces of art they will study. The students will research the artists and write responses to the artwork. They will incorporate these into PowerPoint presentations that again can be used by both students to share. The second and third projects will focus on the universality of art.
