Teacher Projects:
Peter Baker & Gagik Karapetryan
U.S. School: Window Rock High School Fort Defiance, AZ
Armenian School: Ashtarak V. Petrosyan School Aragatsotn Region, Ashtarak
Thus far two projects have been completed. The first project we completed was introductions. All Armenian and American
(Navajo) students were matched up with one another. These students have continued to exchange messages for the past several
months. During this period of introductions, the American students watched a film (Ararat) about the Armenian experience and
commented on it with their partners.
The second project focused on the Navajo and Armenian experiences in terms of persecution and genocide. The American
(Navajo) students interviewed elders and got their impressions of what it was like growing up Navajo, Native American, or some
other minority (in this case a Bahi from Iraq). Pictures and comments on this interview process where posted on the website.
Secondly, students from Mr. Baker’s World History classes created Power Point presentations about the Armenians in The Ottoman
Empire and what happened to them. These presentations have been posted on the website, too.
As the projects have progressed, it has become clear that all work must be done in a traditional, main-stream classroom
rather than as a club or extracurricular activity. Knowing this, a class has been chosen at Window Rock High School to continue
on the work. All students who initially started the project in the ‘club’ format will be encouraged to continue to exchange
messages with their Armenian friends. The entire student body and staff at Window Rock Unified School District #8 looks
forward to welcoming our Armenian guest in April.
