Armenian School: Gyumri School #5 Shirak Region, Gyumri

The partnership between Melsida Khatchatryan at Gyumri School #5 and myself at The Foundation Academy in Jacksonville Beach, Florida has been an amazing learning experience for all involved. My students (17 middle school girls, ages 12-14) have seen my pictures of the trip to Armenia and are fascinated by the beautiful countryside, the wonderful people I describe, and the places that were visited. They love exchanging ideas and opinions with Melsida's class - it makes the whole photo album they've seen come alive with real people and real experiences. We exchanged preferences about music, we studied proverbs and sayings from each country and were able to get to know each other through the internet. Our classes, both in Gyumri and Jax Beach, are trying to create a children's book of proverbs with artwork and written text. No matter the outcome, this exchange has been invaluable for opening doors to the world for my students, as well as Melsida's. The icing on the cake will be when they get to meet Melsida and learn more about the country they have gotten so close to this year.
