The Armenian School Connectivity Project (ASCP) is a program of the U.S. Department of State,
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, funded through the FREEDOM Support Act and implemented
by Project Harmony.
The three major goals of this project were to build friendships between the students of Gavar School
# 9 and Ogden High School, for students to learn about proverbs of other countries, and for all of the
students to develop their English language proficiency. These goals have been accomplished in the following
manner.
Students began by writing to each other about themselves, their families, and their schools. They
asked and answered questions. In this way students developed friendships with each other. Using
collaborative methods the teachers then put the students into study groups, considering ages, interests,
and communications already developed. In the second part of the project, students worked in study groups
of 2 Armenian students and 2 American students. Each student wrote a proverb and asked students from the
other school to interpret the proverb. In some cases students answered the questions with a proverb from
their own culture; in some cases it was necessary for students to write back and ask for clarification of
the meanings of some words. This led to more communication. An interesting aspect of this project was when
students told of family proverbs. The project included proverbs from Armenia, Mexico, China and the United
States. The number of communications in the study groupsranged from seven to eleven. After two weeks of
communication the students from Ogden High School summarized their group of 4, or more, proverbs with the
meanings and country of origin and the Armenian students used these summaries to make PowerPoint
presentations.
Students were eager to work on this project and were disappointed when they did not hear from their
counterparts in a timely manner. The tangable results of this project are the PowerPoint projects.
