Teacher Projects:
Amy Nicol & Hermine Hayroyan
U.S. School: West Liberty Salem High School West Liberty, OH
Armenian School: Surenavan Secondary School Ararat Region, Surenavan
My partner is Mrs. Hermine Hayroyan from Surenavan Secondary School in the Ararat Region of Armenia. Our collaboration
is titled, "Growing Together: Armenian and American Culture and Agriculture". To date, we have been able to introduce our
students to each other through used of the WebX space provided by Project Harmony. This has enabled our students to get an
introduction not only to each other but also to the other culture. Our second phase of the collaboration has been studying
grape production in our own countries and teaching the other students from Armenia and the United States about the way grapes
are produced in each country through PowerPoint presentations. The students have also written a bi-lingual book about grape
production in Ohio which is written in both Armenian and in English. A website has been created to showcase my travels to
Armenia as a teacher and student work created as a result of our collaborations. A link to this website can be found in the
Additional Links section below.
Finally, we have created an informational display in our classroom that teaches about Armenia and our partners there.
Future phases of our collaboration will include the topics of: Cultivation of Fruit Gardens, Processing of Agriculture Products
and The Role of Government in Agriculture.
Through these projects, Hermine and I hope our students will:
- Have an increased awareness and understanding of other cultures.
- Foster an appreciation for other cultures and how our worlds are inter-related.
- Establish an awareness for large scale vs. small scale agriculture production.
- Develop a deeper understanding for the roles of government in agriculture and agriculture policy.
- Develop a collective collaboration of Armenian and American student work in cd form concerning culture and agriculture in each country.
- Understand the need for tolerance in relationship to other cultures.
- Gain computer skills through the use of WebX, PowerPoint, web page creation, and internet research.
