September 13-22, 2002, two US professionals traveled to Russia to contribute to the Evaluation and Training Trip for the Juvenile Drug Enforcement and Prevention Program. Detective Linda Barker, a School Resource Officer at Memorial Middle School in South Portland, ME, one of the original JDEP trainers, was joined by Carrie Stilphen, Assistant Principal at Mahoney Middle School, also in South Portland.
Detective Barker and Ms. Stilphen participated in two-day seminars in Velikiy Novgorod and Petrozavodsk, Russia. At each seminar:
Russian professionals shared information about the juvenile drug problem in their city and what programs were being implemented to address the problem.
US trainers shared materials with their Russian colleagues and discussed the process of evaluating the effectiveness of programs like DOM.
US trainers shared techniques for interactively teaching students about drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse in the classroom.
Russian professionals who have already implemented the DOM curriculum shared their experience and best practices with each other.
The US trainers also had the opportunity to visit several Russian schools and observe DOM lessons being taught there.
The Evaluation and Training Trip allowed both Russian professionals and US trainers that have been involved in the development and implementation of the DOM curriculum since 1998 to evaluate the progress they've made in bringing the curriculum to the forefront of their city's efforts to address the juvenile drug problem. As the curriculum continues to be implemented in classrooms across Russia, the evaluation of its effectiveness will become increasingly important. This trip was a successful beginning to the vital evaluation process.
