  Host Family Resources

"We learned about the country, its history, economic struggles, and its desire to integrate into the world community. We knew little about the Republic of Georgia before our guest's arrival, but his personality and enthusiasm raised our interest to such a degree that we would like to visit him someday."
~ Host Family

During the course of their program, participants stay with host families so they can experience first hand American culture and lifestyles. Project Harmony's host families are all volunteers, and they are the backbone of successful Community Connections programs. Participants are able to immerse themselves fully in the program with the support and hospitality they receive at home from their hosts. In return, hosts enjoy the experience of sharing ideas, perspectives (and new foods!) with a guest from another country.

Host families have several responsibilities:
Provide breakfast, dinner and sleeping quarters
Arrange for transportation to and from program activities, with the assistance of Project Harmony staff
Complete a Host Family Profile form at the beginning of the program, and an evaluation form at the end of the program
Integrate your guest into the daily routine and life of your family
Share your own culture, background and interests with your guests
Introduce your guest to cultural and recreational activities in your area
Be flexible with your guest's limited English skills
Celebrate the program's success at a final dinner in honor of host families
Have fun!

Project Harmony gives all participants an allowance of $25 for each day of the program to cover lunches, miscellaneous expenses and cultural events they enjoy with their host families. Each participant also has medical insurance that covers accidental illnesses or injuries. Host Families are not responsible for any medical expenses incurred by their guests. Project Harmony staff work closely with host families throughout the program to organize logistics, solve problems and generally assist host families in any way necessary. Interested Vermont households, are invited to apply!

"I don't know how we will ever let Elena go home. I cannot bear to think about it. We have become such close friends in such a short time."

"I am so grateful to Project Harmony for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. This program made me realize how lucky we are, how important family is and how important friends are. This whole experience made me grow as a person."
