WHAT DOES PROJECT HARMONY EXPECT OF YOU?
Your full cooperation is needed to fulfill all aspects of the program. Project Harmony has basic expectations of participants while they are here in the United States. Program staff will ask you to read and sign a form, which outlines Project Harmony's basic expectations for all participants. Non-compliance with any of these expectations may cause you to return home early at your own expense:
- Be fully committed to the program organized by Project Harmony and understand that this is your sole reason for coming to the United States.
- Be actively engaged in the program and participate in all scheduled activities organized by Project Harmony, host families and host businesses.
- Be properly dressed during the professional program and scheduled activities organized by Project Harmony, host families and host businesses.
- Be on time for all scheduled activities.
- Be respectful and courteous to all people involved in the program, be they representatives of Project Harmony, host businesses or host families.
- Communicate clearly with host families, host organizations and Project Harmony about schedules and other issues that directly impact the scheduled program.
- Refrain from drinking alcohol in excess or in a manner that impacts taking part in scheduled activities.
- Address any concerns, problems or questions directly to Project Harmony staff.
WHAT DOES THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE EXPECT OF YOU?
In addition, the Department of State has expectations that you will sign and adhere to during your stay in the U.S. Non-compliance with any of these expectations may lead to the early termination of your program and an early return home, at your expense.
Comply fully with all applicable laws of the United States and of any state in which you are located during the Community Connections Program or through which you travel while in the United States.
Refrain from the possession or use of any drugs while in the United States, except those which may be prescribed to you by a qualified physician.
Comply fully with all reasonable rules and customs of the host family or families with whom you are placed.
Comply fully with all rules and regulations of the American company or organization at which you will be performing an internship or visiting.
Assume full responsibility for any claims, damages, liability expenses, lawsuits or injuries which might occur or which arise as a result of your own actions, including your operation of a motor vehicle while in the United States.
Notify the local community organization facilitating your internship or professional program of your location any time you leave the area for personal travel.
Acknowledge that violation of any of the above provisions could result in the termination of your internship and participation in the Community Connections Program. The abbreviation of your stay in the United States would be accompanied by a corresponding reduction in stipend.
Return home upon termination of the Community Connections Program.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Driving
You are not allowed to drive during your stay in the United States. Even if you have an international driver's license, participants will not be allowed to rent cars or drive cars during their stay.
Personal Travel
As stated above, you are expected to participate in the program at all times. While you may have some contacts in the United States, you should not plan on seeing them while you are here. If you have something that you need to mail, or you would like to contact friends or family in the United States, Project Harmony staff can help you with that.
Computer Use
You should only use your host family's computer only after asking their permission, and you should not be surprised if they choose to stay with you while you are using the computer. Project Harmony has had serious computer use problems in the past that have led to participants' having to move out of their host families' houses. Due to past problems with computer viruses and Internet pornography, we request that you not download any materials or documents off of the Internet. Even by downloading a simple text document, you may be unknowingly downloading a damaging computer virus as well.
CONSEQUENCES
While it is not our purpose to scare you into following all of these rules, you should be aware of the consequences of not complying with the expectations. Your program is paid for entirely by the United States government and organized by Project Harmony. Project Harmony has the right, with the support of the U.S. government, to send participants home at their own expense. This means that you will be responsible for the cost of changing your airplane tickets and for returning per diem money for the remaining days of the program. You will not receive a certificate showing that you successfully participated in this program.
