A billboard advertising cigarettes. Commercial advertising didn’t exist during the Soviet period. Many items had very generic names, including stores: most bakeries were called “bakery,” and stores that sold shoes would have a sign saying only “shoes.” Since the arrival of “glasnost” (openness) during the mid-1980s, Western-style advertising has become increasingly prevalent in Russia. Some may see creativity and free enterprise where others see global homogeneity and shameless manipulation.
