Looking into Pechorsky Monastery from outside the walls. The Monastery, founded in 1473, was used as a fortress at the time when Russia’s western border was threatened by the Germanic peoples. Pechorsky Monastery is one of the very few that remained functioning during the years of communism. Today, thousands of pilgrims flock here during Russian Orthodox holidays.
