Christine Ruth of Somers Point, NJ, embodies audience participation during a folk performance by a Novgorod youth collective. The young women demonstrate the pre-wedding ritual of covering the bride's hair, while singing a traditional song. Little did the performers know when choosing Ruth from the crowd that she is due to get married -- in a more contemporary style -- this summer. |

| The cultural program in St. Petersburg began with an Easter lunch at St. Vladimir's Cathedral in the company of two Orthodox priests. This event was made that much more special by the fact that this day marked the first time in over two decades that Orthodox and Catholic Easter fell on the same Sunday. Children from the Sunday school sang Easter hymns for the group. |

Kathy O'Neill of Ontario, Canada, in St. Petersburg's Palace Square. Behind her stands the Winter Palace, home of the Hermitage Museum. Kathy writes: "One of the most magnificent sites in Russia is the Palace Square in St.
Petersburg. One could almost hear the hooves on the cobblestones, the ladies alighting from the carriages, silk gowns rustling and the beckoning lights of an evening soiree from a bygone era. While in Novgorod, I had the opportunity to be escorted by four very talented high school students around their community one evening. Their voices contained such pride when explaining the history and significance of certain buildings. Whether it be Novgorod or St. Petersburg, Russians have much to be proud of their architectural heritage." |

The cultural program in Russia's "Window on the West" city included time in the world-famous Hermitage Museum, a trip to Catherine's Summer Palace in the town of Pushkin, a tour of the Church of Spilled Blood and St. Isaac's Cathedral, and a folk performance at the Nikolaevsky Palace. |
