Program Overview |
In 2006, Project Harmony received a two-year grant from the US Department of State Office of English Language Programs for the English Access Microscholarship Program (EAMP). EAMP provides financial support to English-language camps and after-school programs throughout Russia. Participants are from low-income or otherwise disadvantaged families, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to access language learning skills of this caliber. Participating EAMP camps and programs provide youth with opportunities to improve their English skills, learn about American culture, and have fun while doing so. Alumni from US-government supported exchange programs are recruited whenever possible to staff the camp, which gives the campers an opportunity to learn about the US from people who have lived and studied there.
In the first year of the program, EAMP supported 17 camps in 15 cities and an after-school program for the 2006-2007 school year. Thanks to EAMP, 1,547 youth were able to participate. Along with English language skills, campers learned English and American culture through interactive computer programs, karaoke, and games such as twister, baseball, and scavenger hunts.
