  2000 Program Results

The Youth Leadership Program's inaugural year produced great results for all of those participated. The program itinerary established an intense pace of experiential and classroom-based activities, both in Vermont and Boston. The students and teachers from Bosnia-Herzegovina completed the program having achieved many great successes in three short weeks.

The delegation of ten students and two teachers competed the three-week leadership training program in January 2000. The group spent two weeks in Vermont, hosted by families from Harwood Union High School in central Vermont. They completed a rigorous schedule of school-based activities that focused on youth activism, democratic principles and student-led initiatives on campus. While in Vermont the delegation completed a two-day problem solving workshop with ReCycle North, an innovative non-profit in Burlington, Vermont that provides job training while promoting responsible consumerism.

The final week of the program brought the delegation to Boston, Massachusetts, where families from Fenway High School hosted them. During their time at Fenway, the students and teachers participated in a modified peer mediation training, which proved to be among the most interesting components of the entire three-week stay. While in Boston, the delegation spent three days with the Sabre Foundation, receiving instruction on Internet navigation and electronic methods of communicating with each other and youth activities abroad. The Sabre Foundation generously donated $30,000 worth of new textbooks to the represented BiH high schools, through their textbook donation program. Six high schools in BiH expect to receive several hundred new textbooks, selected by the participants, at the beginning of the school year in September 2000.

Here is the delegation's final schedule from January 2000.
