During the application process, students will be asked to identify an adult mentor / coach in their community who is willing to provide support to the student throughout the program activities. Mentors can be a community leader, older family member, teacher or other individual who has access to the Internet, can meet regularly with the student, and who is able to commit to working with the student throughout the program.
The mentor's responsibilities include:
 | Meet with student at least once per week: Once a student has been selected as a finalist, mentors should schedule regular meetings with their student to discuss online assignments. Mentors should be aware that students must complete all assignments in order to qualify for travel to Jordan or Vermont. |
 | Brainstorm with student: Mentors should be available to brainstorm ideas, and support research assignments as students begin to prepare project ideas. |
 | Monitor student's online communication: Mentors will be given access to the program online forum where they should log on at least once every two weeks to observe student interaction. Mentor's communication with PH / UPA staff is strongly encouraged. |
 | Formalize commitment: Mentors and students will sign a contract accepting their responsibilities. |
 | Number of students: A mentor may tend to only one student. |
 | Ensure student's timely completion of selected project: Once the travel to Jordan and Vermont are completed, the student will be required to present their project to a community organization within a specified timeframe. Mentors should ensure that the student completes this assignment, and posts a report to the online forum. |
 | Provide constructive advice to student: Mentors should provide constructive feedback and support to their student in the preparation and presentation of their project. |
 | Role in student's project presentation to community: Mentors should assist their students in refining their project in preparation for the student to conduct a presentation in their community. |
 | Write an evaluation: Mentors will be asked to complete an evaluation of their student's participation, program structure and activities. |
 | Online forum: Mentors will be encouraged to continue participating in the program outline forum. |
