Digital Storytelling

What is Digital Storytelling?

Digital storytelling gives any individual anywhere an opportunity to have a voice, by telling his or her story and sharing it with the world via the Internet. Digital stories are narratives that allow individuals to explore issues of concern through their personal experiences. They can also be used to advocate for an issue and brainstorm ways to make change. Digital Storytelling uses computers to create media-rich stories (using text, voice-overs, pictures and music) and the Internet to share those stories.

How is Digital Storytelling Used During FLEX-TAP?

Students must articulate ideas about personal stories that have affected their lives. These personal stories are then connected to a subject of concern in their home countries. Using the Digital Storytelling Cookbook and Traveling Companion as a primary lesson plan, students learn a variety of software applications and their relationship in the creation of a digital story. Participants complete a project that addresses a need in their home country, contains a personal connection, and includes various technologies learned at the workshop. Digital storytelling has been very effective in the past because of its emotional impact. By having a personal connection to an issue, students become more motivated to advocate for the issue when they return home.
