Dear FLEX Students,
Welcome to the online event. We are excited to have you as a participant. You will need to prepare five (5) appropriate questions to ask Mr. Taplin. These questions can relate to:
- Democracy and Elections
- Recent events in Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine
- The work that Mr. Taplin does as the Director of the Office of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
- Mr. Taplin's previous and current professional experiences
- Other relevant issues that interest you
To help you write these questions, first complete the three (3) homework assignments below.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 1: MARK TAPLIN'S BIOGRAPHY
Read Mr. Taplin's biography to learn more about him and his work. Write at least one (1) question based on the information that you learn in this biography.
He also served as Deputy Director of the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2001-2002) and Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine (1999-2001). His past overseas assignments also include two tours in Moscow, as well as public diplomacy assignments in Brazil, Haiti and
Mauritius.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities and international affairs from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is the author of Open Lands: Travels Through Russia’s Once Forbidden Places.
