In 1992, Armine became one of the first Armenian Language and Cross-Cultural
Instructors for the newly opened US Peace Corps office in Yerevan, Armenia.
After managing the English Education Program for eight years, she became a
Program a Training Officer in 2000 and was supervising volunteers across
three programs: English Education, Community Health Education, and Business
Education. "It was fascinating to see the positive outcome of the
discussions around cultural issues which occurred when Armenian educators
worked with Americans."
In addition, she also mentored American volunteers on creating and
implementing Community Development projects in Armenia. Integrating various
sector initiatives meant she gained exposure to facets of information and
communication technology, gender and development programs, as well as
environmental and youth development work.
Working with Peace Corps Volunteers was particularly rewarding and she
marveled at their accomplishments in Armenian schools. Seeing Armenian
principals and educators embrace new ideas and implement new projects while
working with Peace Corps Volunteers, at times, surprising. In that work and
in general, Armine prefers the “asset-based” approach and thinks it the key
to her success. “It helps people generate new images of the future evoked
by the best of the past and present to ignite the collective imagination of
what might be.”
In addition to translating for the SATI, Armine will also share her
knowledge of both educational systems and attempt to integrate her direct
experiences in both. She is a strong believer in education: "I salute
every effort made towards increasing the number of educated people in the
world!" Project Harmony is excited to have Armine join the delegation and
share her expertise. Her positive attitude and spirit of volunteerism will
be a huge asset to this program. She will be instrumental in helping us to,
as she puts it: “raise our awareness of the value, strength and potential of
ourselves and others, as well as overcome the limits that we impose on our
own capacities.”
Armine Poghikyan graduated from the Foreign Languages
Pedagogical University in Yerevan, Armenia with a major in English and minor
in French. Before working with Peace Corps Armine has taught at various education centers
and schools teaching Enlgish as a Foreign Language.
